I'm kind of a phony.

I didn’t go to ad school or sit in any marketing classes. I took my BA in history to the Virgin Islands, where it was wildly underutilized as I sold title insurance by day and administered emergency animal care by night. In between, I created whatever I could, mostly writing short stories and writing/recording music.

This particular career path didn’t occur to me until, upon coming to my senses and moving back to the States, I answered an ad on Monster for a proofreading gig at an agency.

15+ years later and I guess I qualify as an “advertising professional.” But, even after all I’ve accomplished, that sounds weird to my ears. I’m still waiting for someone to call me out.

In the meantime, here's some of the stuff I’ve been fortunate to do, a lot of it with my art director partner, Jon Cochran. . .

  • Over a span of seven years, helped transform the Gillette brand into a modern presence through 360º global campaigns, high-profile partnerships, brand films and more. I’ve been one of the longest-running creatives on the account.

  • Spent half a year co-creating and developing Gillette’s headline-inducing “We Believe” anthem.

  • Serve as day-to-day client-facing creative lead and oversee teams for two brands concurrently, AARP and Invesco.

  • Made Gillette’s best-performing and -received commercial in a decade. (“Your Best Never Comes Easy” with Shaquem Griffin)

  • Directed/created a short film series for the TREO razor designed for caregivers.

  • Ran a non-profit AIDS-related charity in NYC for several years with my friends. We held an annual fundraiser concert with performers such as Jon Oliver, Aziz Ansari, The Mountain Goats.

  • Wrote stuff that was published in humor books such as The Indie Cred Test on Penguin and The Rock Bible on Quirk.

  • Currently recording an album, as required by law for all Brooklyn residents.

  • Have wasted my money feeding my addictions to live music (over 1,000 shows) and records (don’t ask).

For what it’s worth, I also love dogs, baseball and really good TV, in no
particular order.

True professional or not, I’ll keep creating things and crafting them until they’re as good as they can possibly be. For me, it’s all about the work and the people with whom I’m lucky to create it.
